What is a pivot point?

A pivot point is the part of the sword handle around which the sword rotates.

Background

With Thai swords (Daab) the pivot point is relatively close to the balance point at the middle of the sword (i.e. almost one third away from the handle end). This ensures a high rotation speed and enables complex motion patterns. It also facilitates the use of the knob at the end of the hilt (pommel) with which blunt blows can be performed.

The Thai sword is held just behind the pivot point. The thumb, the base of the index finger and the forefinger act as the axis of rotation, while the opening and closing of the hand creates the rotary swing. Sword strokes can thus be produced not only from the arm or body rotation, but also from the hand or wrist.
