What is a Chao Kam Nai Wen?

A Chao Kam Nai Wen (เจ้ากรรมนายเวร) is a spirit being from Thai folklore who is said to be evil to a person because that person inflicted false karma on him or her during his or her lifetime.

Background

In Thai Buddhism, it is believed that a person’s actions in life determine his fate in the hereafter. If a person has committed bad deeds, he or she will be reborn in a lower life form, for example, as an animal. However, when a person has done good deeds, they are reborn in a higher life form. If a person has done false karma to another person, the victim may haunt them as Chao Kam Nai Wen.
