What is a Phi Thuai Khaeo?

Phi Thuai Khaeo (ผีถ้วยแก้ว), the spirit of the glass back, is a spirit being from Thai folklore.

Background

Phi Thuai Khaeo, is a type of Thai Ouija practiced in Thailand. It is said that this spirit can be summoned by placing an upside-down glass on a table and asking it questions.

The glass will then supposedly move to answer the questions. Some say that this spirit is an evil spirit that likes to play tricks on people, while others believe that it is a benign spirit that can help people communicate with the dead.

The use of Ouija as a means of communicating with the spirit world was first documented in China around 1100 AD, in the Song Dynasty. In this method, known as fuji “planchette writing,” a small board or planchette was used to write messages.

The use of such tablets as a means of summoning spirits and communicating with the dead ran throughout Chinese history and was even adopted by the Quanzhen school during the Qing Dynasty.

However, the use of Fuji boards was eventually banned by the ruling dynasty. Today, the Ouija board is often considered a toy or joke item, but its origins reveal a more spiritual purpose.
