In Pahuyuth, “Learning Fee” is colloquially referred to as self-inflicted minor injuries, such as hematomas, abrasions and broken noses. The term goes back to a custom in medieval Europe to pay a teacher for the training of an apprentice.

Analogous to the model of autodynamics, the cause, process and effect of teaching fees are not limited to the physical level. Experiencing one’s own inadequacies and dealing with one’s own emotions can trigger physical and psychological growth processes.

The so-called learning fee is native to many martial arts and is also known there by other names. For example:

  • Okinawa Tattoos
