What is a Muay Tae?

Muay Tae (muay foot) is a Muay Thai fighter who specializes in the use of foot techniques. A MUAI fighter who specializes in foot techniques is called a foot specialist (Muai Tae).

Origin of Muay Tae

Muay Tae comes from Muai Dtien (Dtien = foot), which was originally called Muai Galierng. The term “Galierng” comes from a mountain tribe whose inhabitants were known to have very strong legs.

Meaning

What is often misunderstood by foreign athletes (see Muay Farang) is that the term Muay Tae is not a specific fighting style, but an attribute that is assigned to a fighter.

In earlier times, such terms were mainly used to advertise combat pairings to the betting public. At that time, the focus of the betters was less on the question of victory or defeat, but on whether and how, for example, a foot specialist (Muay Tae) would prevail against a fist specialist (Muay Mat). Bets were placed for or against the success of certain techniques. In the event of success, the fighters were rewarded with bonuses by the bettors.
